The sun shone obscenely today and lured us out onto the terrace for breakfast. I’ve totally given up on my usual healthy breakfast of museli – the one I bought here is just too sweet for the am – or any time really so I’ve given myself over to the croissant for breakfast – indulgence par excellence but I can feel my jeans getting tighter already.
In a flash it was nearly 11 am and not a cow milked. The local Romenay market was on and they close at 12 so we had to scramble ourselves out the door and down the road for some emergency rations – baguette, croissants, fruit, wine – and some pink sneakers for Stella for 5 euros. I also had to visit la poste and try and pay for an autoroute fee we had not been able to pay on the day of arrival. No cash and the 5 credit cards we had didn’t work so they gave us a ticket and 8 days to pay. The poste lady very helpfully wrote out a money order and put it in an envelope and posted it for me. I can’t believe you can’t just pay it online with a credit card but apparently non. Such are the machinations of French bureaucracy – best not to go there or we might fall a teensy bit out of love with la France.
So after the relative dashing about in the village it was time to return home and continue relaxing. Some reading was achieved – I’m reading Peter Temple’s The Broken Shore and it’s fantastic. His writing is so keenly observed and makes me laugh out loud. It feels a little too indulgent coming all the way to France to sit in the garden and relax but if that’s what it takes – c’est la vie.
Later in the afternoon Geoffrey and I took the bicycles out for a short ride through the corn fields while the kids watched a spot of Kaf Kim. The day was just too perfect not to seize the moment and within minutes we were riding in a lovely forest, hoping maybe to see a deer but they’re very elusive.
Dinner then off to bed early so we can get up before the birds in the morning and watch the grand final. Very considerate of them to replay it for us as last weekend we couldn’t even get it on the internet but here the internet is better so Geoffrey plans to settle in early in the am for all the hype and drama of the re-run.
The forecast for the next few days is 21 degrees and sunny – Tournous tomorrow plus Pouilly Fuse for some wine.
